THE CHARGE OF THE WHITE BRIGADE

Back in 1870 Alfred Lord Tennyson penned a poem entitled ‘The Charge of The Light Brigade’ about a disastrous charge of the British Cavalry led by Lord Cardigan against the Russian forces at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 in the Crimean War.

On Monday afternoon, Feb. 22 at Monticello Raceway had a similar charge of its own when two gray-colored pacers, Zeeskite and Pembroke Annie Mac, battled to the finish line in what was a ‘Charge of the White Brigade’.

Zeeskite, owned by Arthur and Lynn  Matises and driven by Zeke Parker , rallied  for the lead in the deep stretch only to be challenged in the final strides  by Alan Schwartz and Pembroke Annie Mac . Both pacers had to overcome the leaders through the lane and as the field reached  the finish Zeeksite was head in front Pembroke Annie Mac in a 2:01:1 clocking.

“It’s a rarity when gray horses race against one another but when two finish first and second in the same event its even more rare,” noted  Eric Warner the tracks Director of Racing.” And that they were dueling through the stretch and were just heads apart at the wire made the race even more exciting.”
