Last year Samawinner had a terrific year winning seven races, the fastest in 1:58.3, and amassing purses in excess of $65,000 for the owner-trainer combination of Woody Hoblitzell and Brue Aldrich.

This season the  6-year-old Victory Sam gelding has been struggling  producing just  two wins and  a $13,000 bankroll. But all the struggling was all but forgotten when  Kyle DiBenedetto   guided  Hoblitzell’s pride and joy to a stellar 1:58.3 triumph in  Monticello Raceway’s winners- over trot on Wednesday afternoon, August 8. In doing so they defeated the 1-5 favorite  Buck ID driven by Zeke Parker.

“This is the best mile he’s gone all year and his time of 1:58.3 equaled his best last season,” trainer Bruce Aldrich after the winning mile. “He was like his old self, gritty right to the end collaring the hot favorite Buck ID  in the final strides.”

Parker sent Buck ID to the lead from post four and they made the top easily coasting unchallenged to the quarter in a soft :30. With no movement from the rears Parker and Buck ID passed the second station in 1:00 with DiBenedetto and Samsawinner tight on the Parker’s back.

A :29.2 third quarter didn’t  allow Buck ID to  any open daylight and when the two trotters  turned for home the real race ensued.Despite a :29 second  final panel Samsawinner surprisingly  caught Buck ID in the final strides for a head  triumph. Pointe Of Honour finished third for Greg Merton

“ With those easy early fractions I really didn’t think we would beat Buck ID but I kept him  tight on Billy’s back the entire mile”, DiBendetto said . “When we headed for home I still had plenty  horse and we began gaining with every stride and  I was a happy camper when we crossed the wire because I knew we beat the 1-5 favorite.”

Sent off at odds of 9-1 Samsawinner paid  $21.00 for win.
